ASIA MULTIS IN LOCIS DEI MATREM

£295

Full title "Asia Multis in Locis Dei Matrem Colit, et Vicissim Multos Favores ab Illa Accipit"

Attractive map of Asia. There is a stunning title cartouche showing two figures in Asian dress worshipping with an image of the Garden of Eden, and the Virgin and child appearing above them.

Jesuit missions are marked by stars.

The map extends from the Red Sea to the Philippines and includes Indo-China and the East Indies. Scherer's highly imaginative representation of Hokkaido (Iedso) is connected to Honshu by a narrow isthmus. The Mariana Islands form a prominent archipelago trailing off the southeast coast of Japan. Partial outlines of Nova Hollandia, Carpentaria, and Nova Guinea appear at bottom right. The decorative cartouche shows the conversion of the Asian people to Christianity and incorporates a vignette of Adam and Eve with the serpent and the apple tree. Two sailing ships further decorate the map.
