AFRICA ANTIQUA ET NOVA

Philip Cluver (Cluverius) along with Christoph Keller (Cellarius) was one of the first geographical and historical authors to use different sets of maps to embellish their popular works. Cluver's magnum opus was 'Introductionis in Universam Geographicam' which was issued in various sized editions from about 1650 to the mid-1700's.
This beautiful map of the continent of Africa comes from a 1683 edition of 'Introductionis..' Much of the geography would appear to gleaned from the work of the great French cartographer, Nicolas Sanson, because of the positioning of two great central lakes. He does however show the fictitious 'Lunes Montes', Mountains of the Moon, propagated by Ptolemy more than one thousand years before. Beautifully engraved and packed with detail, this is certainly a map for collectors of Africana.
Excellent hand colour.
