AFRICA NOUUELLE DESCRIPTION D'AFRIQUE

VERY RARE.

ACCORDING TO Betz, Richard L., with Penelope W. Betz. The Mapping of Africa: A Cartobibliography of Printed Maps of the African Continent to 1700.

'Not much is known about Nicolas Picart. He is known as an engraver and a mapmaker who produced a map of Africa with decorative panels in 1644. He is also known to have published editions of Trésor des cartes géographiques from 1651 to c.1659, including this map of Africa. There are two examples of the c.1659 edition of Trésor des cartes géographiques (and this map of Africa) known to us (one in a private collection and one at the Nationale de France in Paris).'

Shortly after 1659, Gerard Jollain (1638-c.1724) acquired the Picart copperplates. He published later editions of Trésor... in c.1660 (an undated edition), and in 1667. Sometime after 1667, Pierre Duval acquired the copperplates and published an edition of Trésor... . The map is known in four states. This map is the third state, with the scale bar erased and showing erasure of all but 'L' in 'Lieuses d'Allemag' bottom left. All states are rare.'

I have the 1653 frontispiece and this map has scale bar.

This is most likely the first edition of this map!!

Top margin cropped close but all map there.Very good condition
