Striking example of Leo Belgicus (the Low Countries in the shape of a lion),this version of the Leo Belgicus is based on the original Aitsinger form with the lion standing facing east with the right paw raised and holding a shield. This version illustrated Strada's book on the 80 year war between Spain and the Low Countries.

The Dutch lion is a household name. The animal symbolizes the strength and courage of the Low Countries. The lion map not only functioned as a useful map, but was often hung on the wall as a statement. It was an expression of active citizenship, of pride, of self-awareness and often served as a spectacular piece in the house of a merchant or government building.

Leo Belgicus maps are perhaps the rarest and most sought after of all antique maps. All examples of Leo Belgicus maps are scarce to rare. The first edition of this map appeared in 1632. Most editions include a much smaller example of the map, making this edition one of the largest examples.
